What's all this about megahertz and gigahertz and why do I care?
The effective range of a cordless phone is a function of two things: one is the frequency the phone operates at and the second is the operating environment in which the phone will be used. Modern cordless phones employ either a 900 MHz (megahertz) frequency system or a 2.4 GHz (gigahertz) system. (The older frequency - 46/49 MHz - is no longer included in our catalog)
900 MHz
900 MHz units have been around since the early 1990s and are a stellar improvement over the earlier models. 900 MHz phones exhibit much greater range, clarity, and immunity to interference and, with the addition of digital spread spectrum technology (a way to encrypt the signal between the handset and the base) they have much greater privacy and security as well. 900 MHz is now the dominant cordless technology and is used in the majority of cordless phones sold by PHONE SOURCE.
2.4 GHz
Most recently, manufacturers have begun to make cordless products using a new 2.4 GHz frequency. While we have not found a great deal of difference in range between 900MHz and 2.4GHz units, the 2.4GHz models have many advanced features that are worth looking at. For example, mutiple handsets, voicemail, very small handsets, and so on. Some of our newest and most interesting cordless products are 2.4 GHz models.
